Our services

  • Practical help

When people first arrive they often have only the clothes they stand up in. We try to supply a change of clothes and replacement footwear as this is often worn out. We rely on donations from local people to enable this.

Once they have suitable clothing we encourage people to join an English Language class and come to our Conversation Café where they can practice their English in a supportive safe environment.

Leisure is an important part of life, both for physical activity and to maintain good mental health. In partnership with a local charity we try to give bicycles to those who want them to enable them to get around the city and to get to college or work as appropriate. We have volunteer run football sessions, links with local volleyball, table tennis and cricket clubs as well as cycle rides and day trips to local amenities.

  • On-going support.

As sanctuary seekers claims are approved, they must leave the government provided housing and find their own accommodation. Starting with nothing, there is a real need for beds, sofas white goods, bedding and all the things needed for a home. Again, this is mainly reliant on the generosity of local donors and the efforts of our volunteers.

A Drop-In where sanctuary seekers` can access clothes, shoes, mobile data and access to various sports and leisure activities both run by us and with local clubs and associations. Local agencies for health, education, mental health support and other charities also attend these sessions to provide face to face introductions to their services.

  • Education.

Our Families` Drop-In is designed as a social gathering but again, various activities can take place within it such as English coaching where a volunteer gets to know a family prior to visiting them and supporting the wives and mothers in their conversational English or perhaps help with the vocabulary for passing their driving theory test.

Some of our volunteers visit schools to explain the refugee journey and we partner other charities in educating our children in how life can be for less fortunate children around the world
