MSP publishes Overburns survey and calls for Council rejection of application
22 September 2009

“The message from my survey is pretty clear: local residents do not want this quarry." Aileen Campbell MSP

Aileen Campbell, SNP MSP for the South of Scotland, has called on South Lanarkshire Council to refuse planning permission for a new sand and gravel quarry at Overburns Farm, Lamington. Her call comes as she publishes results of a survey of local residents which shows over 89% of respondents are opposed to the plan.

Over 500 households from Biggar, Lamington, Symington and the surrounding area responded to Aileen Campbell’s survey, which also asked residents a series of questions about the possible impact of the quarry and provided the opportunity for additional comments. 447 households who took part in the survey said they disagreed with the proposals. Large majorities said they agreed that the plans would increase pollution and spoil scenic areas, and they did not agree that there would be positive economic benefits for the area. Many responses also commented that the local road infrastructure would not be able to cope with the extra traffic, as well as the extra noise and pollution problems this would cause.

Commenting, Aileen Campbell MSP said:

“The message from my survey is pretty clear: local residents do not want this quarry.

“I’ve been working with the Clyde River Action Group since the plans were first announced in March, and as the planning process gets properly underway I felt it was important to make my own submission to South Lanarkshire Council.

“I’m calling on the Council to reject this application. Respondents to my survey do not believe it will bring jobs to the area – indeed, many comments suggest the increased pollution and traffic might put off tourists and other investments.

“Earlier this year, my survey on the Mainshill Wood proposal showed 70% of respondents are against the plans. This survey shows nearly 90% are against the development at Overburns. South Lanarkshire Council refused to listen in Mainshill; this time they must listen properly to local people and reject the application
